Finnish Institute at Athens
The Finnish Institute at Athens, founded in 1984, is the second oldest Finnish institute outside of Finland. It is a research institute that conducts and promotes the study of Greek archaeology, history, language and culture from Classical to modern times.
The institute coordinates its own research and archaeological fieldwork projects. It also organises international conferences and publishes a scientific journal (Papers and Monographs of the Finnish Institute at Athens), available in Finland from the Tiedekirja bookstore. In addition to research and publications, the institute arranges introductory courses on Ancient Greece and assists Finnish researchers and students. In addition, the institute aims at making the Finnish culture known in Greece and the Greek culture known in Finland.
The institute is located in a neo-classical building in the centre of Athens, south of the Acropolis. The building houses offices and a reference library, which also includes material on Finnish literature and culture. The institute’s main scientific library, the Nordic library, is located in the same block, flanked by the small garden of the institute. The library is maintained as a joint effort by four Nordic institutes (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark; see www.norlib.gr). The institutes of the other Nordic countries, as well as those of Australia, the Netherlands and Italy, are all located near by. The institute has facilities offering accommodation for Finnish researchers, students, artists and authors staying at the institute. These facilities are located north of the centre of Athens, at 25 Ioannou Soutsou.
