Background
The Finnish academic and cultural institutes are independent organisations working in the service of Finnish academic and cultural life. The close relations they have with the institutions in the countries where they are located and with international organisations serve all persons and parties who want to set up projects to reach joint goals. In its country of location, each institute is a central organisation well-versed in the Finnish culture and society.
Culture and science
The institutes are active in art as well as research. The areas of focus of their work differ, depending on the goals defined by the background organisation of each institute. The academic institutes concentrate on supporting scientific research, promoting scientific cooperation and organising academic courses and events. The operation of the cultural institutes, on the other hand, focuses on artistic programmes and the promotion of cultural export.
Flexibility
The institutes are managed by private foundations, representing the Finnish civic society rather than official cultural or scientific policy programmes. In addition to providing a flexible and innovative environment for Finnish cultural and academic institutes, the system ensures close, direct cooperative relations with all central players in the field of culture and academia.
Funding
The institutes are independent non-profit organisations funded by the Ministry of Education by an annual operational grant. The work is also funded through various cooperation agreements with businesses as well as private and public grants.
